A weekend Boy Scout trip turned deadly for a Las Vegas teenager. William Smith, 15, traveled to Arizona to do some rock climbing. But while hiking in an area south of Flagstaff, he collapsed and died a short time later.

Smith was a freshman at Desert Pines High School. He loved sports and being in the Boy Scouts, and the trip to Arizona was nothing out of the ordinary. But this time he didn't come home, and his family is still waiting to find out why.

Smith made Boy Scout trips whenever he could, said his father, John Smith.

“Every time there's been one, Will's been there, unless there was a basketball or football game,” Smith said.

And at 6 foot 6 inches and weighing 280 pounds, he had the frame to do it.

“I couldn't keep this kid out of the woods,” Smith said.

This past Saturday, Willie traveled with two scout masters and two other boys to Coconino County, Ariz., at the small town of Camp Verde. Tragedy struck within minutes.

“They get out of the car. Will's all excited,” Smith said. “He jumps up on this rock, plays King of the World, does a 360 degree turn and falls over, ‘Boom.’”

The Scouts at the scene performed CPR on Willie for an hour and a half before an ambulance arrived, but Willie was pronounced dead at the scene.

“We don't know the cause of death,” Smith said.

Las Vegas Boy Scout executive Phil Bevins said all Scout rules were followed.

“Be prepared means training, experience, means proper equipment, and all indicators are all of those were present on this trip,” said Phil Bevins.

Smith said he agrees.

“All the rules were obeyed to a tee. The Scouts had nothing to do with that,” Smith said. “We blame no one. It's just one of those things that you don't know why.”

The ironic twist -- Willie passed a physical less than a week ago. Now, all that's left are questions.

“Just an overwhelming sense of 'What if,'” Smith said. “My son, your friend, your teammate has passed away. He's dead.”

Willie lettered in three sports at Desert Pines. They called him the wild-a-beast.

Autopsy results will come within then next two days. They're likely to reveal some kind of underlying health condition.

Funeral services for Willie will be held Saturday morning at the Pecos and Osage LDS Chapel. Family members said the public is invited.
