LAS VEGAS -- More than 1,900 people responding to a FOX5 Web poll said the Clark County district dttorney should not file criminal charges against the driver involved in a collision that killed a Las Vegas Metro police officer. An overwhelming majority, 92 percent, sided with Calvin Darling, the Bellagio employee who turned his pickup truck into the path of Officer James Manor's police cruiser. Only 5 percent said Darling should be charged. The rest answered "I don't know."The poll was posted the day after Sheriff Doug Gillespie announced the results of an investigation into the crash. Gillespie said Manor was driving 109 mph with no emergency lights or sirens working at the time. Manor was also not wearing a seat belt.Darling was originally accused of drunken driving, but a blood-alcohol test showed he was far below the legal limit for intoxication. Although police recommended drunken-driving charges be filed, the district attorney's office has not followed through on that request. After being told of Manor's excessive speed, Gillespie said he "would not support" filing charges against Darling for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle.
