Unemployment Hot Line Will Be Down Memorial Day Weekend

LAS VEGAS -- Nevada’s unemployment rate has risen to nearly two percentage points above the national average, according to a report from the state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.April’s jobless rate was 10.6 percent, up 0.2 percent from the month before. Nationwide, the rate is 8.9 percent.The report tallied 146,300 Nevadans out of work statewide, for a rate almost double the seasonally adjusted rate of 5.8 percent in April 2008.A month-to-month breakdown shows the unemployment rate last month remaining steady in the Las Vegas area, at 10.4 percent.The state’s unemployment insurance call center has made adjustments in recent weeks to accommodate more callers.The hot line will be closed for Memorial Day weekend. However, hours will be expanded the following weekend. Phone lines will be open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
