Should Calvin Darling Be Charged In The Crash That Killed Officer James Manor?

Sheriff: Officer Driving 109 MPH At Time Of Crash

Manor Did Not Have Lights, Sirens Turned On

Las Vegas Metro Sheriff Doug Gillespie said Wednesday that Officer James Manor did not have lights and sirens on when his police cruiser collided with a pickup truck, killing him.

Gillespie also said Manor was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident and was driving at “excessive” speeds of 109 mph. The cruiser slowed to 90 mph when the accident happened. The posted speed limit on Flamingo Road was 45 mph.

The revelation is a shocking turn of events in the case, following a public outpouring of support for Manor’s family and a turnout in the thousands at his funeral Friday.

Since the accident May 7, police have insisted that Manor’s emergency lights and sirens were working when his cruiser hit Calvin Darling’s truck at Flamingo Road and Ravenwood Drive.

Through a statement, Darling said he saw no lights and heard nothing as he made a left turn into Manor’s lane. Neighbors who saw the accident also said Manor was driving too fast and did not have his emergency signals on.

Darling was arrested at the crash scene and charged with felony drunken driving, but a blood test showed that although he admitted to drinking “three or four” beers earlier in the night, he was not intoxicated and his blood alcohol content was below the legal limit.

The Clark County District Attorney has not filed formal charges against Darling.
