A 17-month-old boy who died at Summerlin Hospital Sunday was the victim of child abuse.

That’s according to Metro police, who arrested the boy’s mother, 24-year-old Azucena De La Cruz Tuesday.

The baby’s father, Jorge Alacantar, called police Sunday to report the child was moaning and appeared sick. The child died less than two hours later.

A coroner reported finding a half-dollar size bruise on child’s back, as well as a severe rash and internal injuries. The child was also underweight.

When police first interviewed De La Cruz, they said she blamed her 2-year-old boy for jumping on the infant, but there were no witnesses to that incident.

Alacantar told police that De La Cruz said “it was all her fault” and that she wanted to kill herself after the baby died. When asked by detectives whether he thought De La Cruz was responsible, police said Alacantar nodded in agreement.

De La Cruz refused to provide more details to police without an attorney’s presence. She is charged with murder by child abuse. Alacantar is not expected to face any charges.

De La Cruz has two other children, 2 and 2 months. Both have been placed with Clark County Juvenile authorities.
