LAS VEGAS -- Two baby boys were left unattended inside a hot car Friday afternoon while their father was inside a bar, gambling. The temperature outside was in the mid-90s when the children, ages 3 months old and 2 years old, were found at about 12:30 p.m. in front of the Club Car Lounge on South Rainbow Boulevard and West Twain Avenue.Willie Culvert, 35, was arrested and charged with two counts of child endangerment.Metro police said Culvert was carousing inside the bar and gambling for about two hours when someone spotted the children strapped in and alone inside Culvert's SUV.With the sun beating down intensely, officers arrived to rescue the children and called their mother, who is now with them. The Club Car Lounge would not say if Culvert was a regular customer, but the incident has medical professionals outraged.“There is somewhat of a shock value, especially when you're in this line of work, and you know this message is getting out,” said Jason Meilleur.Meilleur has been a Las Vegas paramedic for six years. He said he hears the same excuses for leaving children in cars. Parents always say they will just be a minute.“Time just starts to creep up on them, and the next thing you know, you have a child in a desperate situation due to the heat increasing inside that vehicle,” Meilleur said.Temperatures inside vehicles can shoot up 40 degrees within 30 minutes.”Windows up, windows cracked -- it doesn't make a difference,” he said. The windows were down when Metro arrived at the scene Friday.“It's just like an oven. You turn your oven on and open the door, it's still going to heat to the temperature you set it at. It just might take a bit longer to get there,” Meilleur said. “I can't get into people's minds, but if we can get out just one message, you have to take the time to get your child out of the vehicle.”The brain is the first to experience changes during heat exhaustion, so the first sign is mental state. If a child is confused, not speaking or not responsive, the child needs to be cooled down. The children left in the vehicle were not injured, police said. When police arrived at the scene, they also discovered the car’s keys in the ignition.Culvert had no prior arrests before this incident.
