LAS VEGAS -- They are being called the future of mass transit -- high speed trains. Now, groups are competing to bring the best of the best to Las Vegas. The Desert Xpress was the first proposed project, and now there is a second project on the horizon. The Desert Xpress would be a rail system moving at 150 miles an hour from the Valley to Victorville, Calif. Many people are asking why Victorville? Experts said it's a natural geographic collection point because all east-west freeways converge on Interstate 15 south of Victorville.Planners want to extend the system out to Palmdale.A second project, Maglev, would sprint at 300 miles an hour from Vegas to Anaheim. An 80-minute trip would cost less than $60.There are a lot of people who don't think the train is a good idea, mostly because of the cost.Others said the business from southern California is needed. If either project is given the green light, there could be a groundbreaking within a year.
