LAS VEGAS -- Opening statements were heard Monday in the trial of accused child molester Chester Stiles.Stiles is on trial for allegedly videotaping himself raping a 3-year-old.But on Monday, another alleged victim took the stand. The jury heard from an 11-year-old girl who said she was inappropriately touched by Stiles nearly six years ago.Stiles faces 22 counts. Accused of sexual crimes against two children, Stiles listened to the charges with very little emotion.Throughout the courtroom though, many others shifted in their seats.“The hardest part about this case will be having to listen to a young child describe acts of sexual abuse and to view a videotape and sexual abuse of an even younger child. But in doing so, you will have absolutely no doubt about the defendant's guilt,” said deputy district attorney Mary Kay Holthus. But long before that key piece of evidence is presented, the prosecution questioned an 11-year-old about her alleged encounter with Stiles six years ago.“I was sitting in his lap, and then he touched me,” the girl said. The victim said Stiles was staying at her house in 2003 because he was dating a family friend.“He was just moving his hands around,” the girl said.FOX5 legal analyst Bob Massi said the girl's testimony was a building block for the prosecution.“Starting off with one of the alleged victims in the case is very powerful, because it sets the stage for the entire case,” Massi said.Stiles' defense attorneys asked jurors to be fair and open-minded until all of the testimony is heard.“When you go back to deliberate, you will see that the state has not proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Mr. Stiles is guilty of any of the 22 charges,” said defense attorney Amy Coffee. The mother of the girl who testified also took the stand, saying she called police after her daughter told her what happened. The defense will attempt to discredit the mother during cross-examination.The videotape of the second alleged victim, the one that set-off a man-hunt for Stiles, will be shown to jurors later this week.
