Testimony Begins In Stiles Trial

Hearing Expected To Take 2 Weeks

After sitting 15 people for the jury last week, opening statements in the trial of Chester Stiles will begin Monday.

Stiles, 38, has been accused of more than 20 felonies on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 2-year-old girl and recording it to videotape.

The tape -- showing a man assaulting a toddler -- was found in 2007 in Nye County by Darrin Tuck. Tuck turned the tape over to the Nye County Sheriff's Office, which led to a nationwide manhunt for Stiles, who -- deputies said -- was the man featured in the tape.

That tape is expected to be shown to jurors this week, but neither side has yet to confirm what witnesses will be asked to testify.

"The interesting part of this case is how all these witnesses are going to fit together," FOX5 Legal Analyst Bob Massi said. "There's evidence of the mother in and out of the apartment all the time and this alleged babysitter -- I don't know where she is. You're never going to see Stiles take the stand. You're never going to see the child take the stand."

Given the type of crime and the evidence available, Massi added that there is no reason for the district attorney to be lenient, and he expects the prosecution will go for the highest penalty possible.

Opening statements begin at 10:30 a.m.
