LAS VEGAS -- Nevada's teachers are under fire again, this time from a child advocacy group.According to a report by the National Council on Teacher Quality, Nevada ranks with the rest of the U.S. in not doing what it takes to keep good teachers and remove bad ones.Nevada got a "D+" overall in the report, a "D-" for the way it identifies good teachers, a "D" for retaining them and a "B" for its ability to dismiss bad teachers."As long as we face budget cuts, then the support teachers need to be effective are going to be gone," said Ruben Murillo, president of the Clark County Education Association.Murillo said that the union offers district officials opportunities to study new teachers through their mentoring and induction programs."If teachers are not doing an effective job, there is a way to address those issues," he said. But regardless of the systems the union has put in place to test teachers, some parents are not happy with what they hear about the teacher's performance."I heard from many people pretty negative things," parent Jaimi Schmidt said.Schmidt questions whether she'll end up staying and sending her child to school in the state, but Murillo said it's unfair to judge educators in these economic times because the school district is trying."We're all ready doing a lot of those things," he said. "They're being cut because of budget crisis."Murillo also said that the report is not completely accurate because it is dated and that the next survey should show improvement.
