Union Plans To Fight Proposed Cuts

Leaders Planning Teacher Rallies, E-Mail Campaigns

The Clark County Education Association plans to fight the anticipated school budget cuts.

Union representatives said they're tired of education being on the bottom of the list.

They said they know there's a budget crisis -- but they don't plan to back down.

The Clark County Education Association represents more than 18,000 teachers in the school district.

Union representatives said they plan to fight Gov. Jim Gibbons' proposed moratorium on step increases and reduction of benefits.

The district is slated to cut $120 million from its budget to meet the state's shortfall. Nearly 1,000 jobs and student programs are on the line.

Ruben Murillo, president of CCEA, said enough is enough.

“The governor is proposing cuts. He's asking us to make all these sacrifices, but he's not really offering any solutions,” Murillo said.

Union leaders said they plan to gather legislative advocates and plan several teacher rallies in January.

They will also start e-mail campaigns to drum up more support from the community.

Union leaders from the association will also be in Carson City for the next legislative session to lobby against the cuts.
