McCarran Has Plenty Of Parking For Holidays

Officials Say Travelers Need To Watch For Delays

For several years, McCarran Airport managers have told travelers to get a ride and get dropped off during the holidays to avoid parking problems. But that's not the case this year.

Locals can park in a new economy lot or in two other locations.

Officials said parking shouldn't be a problem this year, but travelers need to pay attention to delays.

Anne Zaczek and her family members will experience Thanksgiving in Las Vegas for the first time this year.

“We are coming here because my niece is having a baby, and we're going to have Thanksgiving with her and her family,” Zaczek said.

On top of the usual holiday traffic, Orbitz has ranked McCarran as the busiest airport in the country this Thanksgiving, based on air ticket sales of arrivals and departures.

Airport officials said they're prepared for the rush with three long-term parking options this year –the garage, which will cost $14 a day; the new economy lot, costing $8 a day; or the remote lot at Warm Springs Road and Gillespie Street, which costs $5 a day.

“We're accustomed to having crowds here at McCarran. It's not going to overwhelm us by any means. We're happy people are traveling,” said McCarran spokesman Chris Jones.

Officials said they are hoping for good weather. One out of four runways is shut down for construction, and officials said winds or rain could cause some major problems.

“If the weather doesn't allow the FAA to use the preferred configuration to bring aircraft in and out, we will see delays. But I can't give predictions on what they will be,” Jones said.

Travelers like Zaczek said Las Vegans should be thankful extreme weather is not in the cards.

“I'm from Chicago, and it's probably 25 to 30 degrees, and it was snowing when we left. And this, whatever it is, is going to be much, much better. So, we're excited about that,” Zaczek said.

Airport officials said between the three parking locations, there will be 13,000 spots available this holiday season.

Officials advised travelers to call ahead to find out which lots are still available at the 24-hour hotline at 702-261-5122.
