CCSD Gets Ready For More Budget Cuts

District Needs To Cut $120M From Budget

It’s only two months into the 2008-2009 school year, and the Clark County School District is bracing itself for another round of cuts.

Administrators warned this time around, the cuts will cause discomfort for the school system and for the entire community.

“It doesn't appear as though there are any other options but making the cuts,” said CCSD Superintendent Dr. Walt Rulffes.

Rulffes said the district needs to cut another $120 million from the budget for each of the next two school years. He said vital positions and services will be on the table for discussion.

“It will be transportation and nursing and arts and music and sports,” Rulffes said.

The district just recently slashed $93 million from its budget for this year.

Shadow Ridge High School's principal, Thomas Barberini, said the consequences of more cuts frighten him.

“These cuts are going to be very, very painful. We're talking about losing programs. We're talking perhaps of increasing class size,” Barberini said.

Barberini said he's taking input from staffers and parents on what areas to cut. But he said enough is enough and wants the Legislature to make education a priority.

“I think what we need to do in this state is get a very stable source of funding for education,” he said.

School officials said they need funding that's independent from how the economy is doing. The downturn already has had a negative impact on the school system.

“We have many parents now who are unemployed. They don't have the ability to feed their students, and so they turn to the school for help,” Rulffes said.

In a letter to staff members, Rulffes said he plans to follow a sequence of cuts to reach the $120 million -- $32 million from the administrative budget, $22 million from the district’s fund balance, $9 million from district-wide cuts and a 3.5 percent cut from each school, for a total of $57 million.
