LAS VEGAS -- Help is on the way for Las Vegas neighborhoods affected by the foreclosure crisis.Nevada is getting millions of dollars through the Neighborhood Stabilization Program.Sen. Harry Reid and Mayor Oscar Goodman toured one of the highest foreclosed areas in Las Vegas on Wednesday -- zip code 89131.“When we hear the word foreclosure, we think more of the blighted neighborhoods that are just having a difficult time. This is a typical neighborhood in Nevada,” Reid said.Reid said Nevada home prices are expected to drop another 6 or 7 percent. The Silver State will receive more than $70 million in federal funding. Las Vegas is slated to get at least $14.7 million.Goodman said the money will be used toward mortgage assistance and lease-to-own programs.“That would assist households with credit problems that prevent them from securing a mortgage by providing them a lease for a given period of time, until they can direct their personal finances to afford it on their own,” Goodman said.Goodman said the funds can't be used to prevent foreclosures.“I think we need to be reasonable and say, ‘There's people now. Let's prevent this, OK?’ We certainly have to address it. Let's prevent this now, before we do this over and over,” said homeowner Tami Soudbakash.Reid said struggling homeowners need to call credit consumer counselors immediately, before they become victims of the foreclosure crisis.“A foreclosure is not good for anyone. It's not good for the lender. It's not good for the neighborhood. It's not good for the taxing entity, the real property taxes,” Reid said.Goodman said right now, there are nearly 15,000 foreclosed homes in the city of Las Vegas.
