After suffering severe head injuries during an attack with a frying pan, the Judicial Discipline Commission has given suspended District Judge Elizabeth Halverson a month's extension for a dismissal hearing.

Attorneys in the case have until Sept. 30 to file final written arguments.

Halverson, who has been on paid leave since June 2007, faces dismissal after allegations she fell asleep on the bench, had improper communications with jurors and abused her staff, among other complaints.

The judge recently lost her re-election bid in the August primary. Her two-year term ends in December.

According to Metro police, Halverson was attacked by her husband, Edward Lee Halverson, 49, Sunday. Authorities were called to the Halverson household for a domestic dispute. Police said that when they arrived, they found Edward Halverson standing in the doorway, covered in blood.

Elizabeth Halverson was found in the back of the house. Police said he had attacked her, striking her multiple times in the head with a frying pan.

She was taken to an area hospital, where she has had surgery to repair her fractured skull. She is listed in serious condition.

Edward Halverson appeared in Justice Court on Wednesday. Bail was set at $113,000 for a charge of attempted murder and battery with a deadly weapon.
