Family Talks About Life After Plane Crash

Family Of 6 Loses Home, Car, Possessions

The family whose home was destroyed in last week’s plane crash near the North Las Vegas airport explained how fate stepped in and saved their lives.

They said they no longer have a home, but they do have each other.

The Castillo family said a rare twist of fate kept them from death, and now, they're trying to piece their lives back together.

"I have nothing. I lost everything," said Miguel Castillo, who rented the home.

All of the family’s material possessions are gone -- car, clothing and home.

Castillo said his daughter would nap in her bedroom every day after she came home from school.

"Last Thursday, I don't know why, but my daughter says, ‘No, I won't go inside the room (and sleep).’ Ten minutes later, fire in this room ... It saved her life," Castillo said.

Castillo said he believes his car may have saved him from the line of fire by blocking the plane's path.

Now, a week later, only ash and memories remain. The furniture is burned, the floors are caved in and the roofs have collapsed.

The Castillo family rented the home, and they said they have no insurance to help rebuild what they lost.

The owners can cover the structure itself, but the family now must start from square one.

“We've got the actions to go after whoever is at fault for what they've lost here,” said the family’s lawyer, Mary Perry. "If something comes up, if mother and baby is harmed from smoke inhalation ... any psychological harm ... We want to get compensation for that, get the counseling and treatments they need."

Castillo said he is sorry about pilot Bill Healy's death, but he must provide for his family.

He said he thanks neighbors and friends for their support.

But now, the Castillos must find a new place to call home.

The family of six is staying at a friend's home.

Castillo said he continues to work, and he's looking for a new house to rent.

The Castillos and their attorney are in the process of setting up a fund for donations at a nearby bank.

For now, anyone who would like to donate can call Perry's office at 702-384-9911.
