LAS VEGAS -- It looks like taxpayers could wind up paying the $29 million bill for southern Nevada's contract trash hauler to seal the old Sunrise landfill.During the Clark County Commission meeting Tuesday, commissioners asked their staff to draw up plans for a surcharge on Republic Services of Southern Nevada customers.During storms in September 1998, trash from the landfill was swept into the Las Vegas Wash, which contaminated Lake Mead, officials said. At the time, the EPA cited Republic Dumpco and the Clark County for violations of the Clean Water Act and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.After this incident, the Environmental Protection Agency mandated that the RSSN must stabilize the solid waste dump until they can develop a plan for the 440-acre landfill.
The dump is three miles east of the city, between Las Vegas and the Lake Mead reservoir on the Colorado River.
