Girl Paralyzed In Drug Dispute Gets Adopted

Mother Sold Assailants Salts Instead Of Meth, Leading To Attack, Police Say

After five years, the foster parents of Brittney Bergeron will finalize her adoption Thursday.

Bergeron, 15, and her almost 4-year-old sister were left alone by their mother, Tamara Schmidt, in a trailer outside Mesquite in 2003. While she was gone, the girls were attacked by two Utah siblings, killing the younger girl and paralyzing Bergeron from the waist down.

During the investigation, police determined the girls were attacked because Schmidt and her boyfriend sold the brothers salt in place of methamphetamine.

Since the attack, Bergeron has asked the courts and her mother to allow her foster parents to adopt her, but Schmidt -- who is serving a 4- to 12-year prison sentence for child neglect -- refused to relinquish custody.

Then, in February, Schmidt finally relinquished custody of Bergeron, allowing her parents the opportunity to adopt her.

Bergeron and her new family have yet to issue a statement about the adoption.
