LAS VEGAS -- Prices at the pump are taking a toll on more than your wallet, officials said.As people are cutting back on how much gas they're buying, it also decreases the funds available for the state roads.Part of the road maintenance budget comes from some of the taxes per gallon of gasoline sold, transportation officials said. Since fewer gallons are being purchased, fewer dollars are going into the fund.Once the tax is collected, the federal government transfers the money to states to help them pay for construction and repairs. In May 2008, Americans drove almost 10 billion fewer miles than in May of last year. Those fewer miles in May represent the third largest monthly drop in 66 years. The Federal Highway Administration said people are driving less by cutting car trips, carpooling, walking or taking mass transit.
