A man has been booked into the Clark County Detention Center after assaulting a Metro police officer with a screwdriver Wednesday morning, police said.

Donald Mason, 40, is facing five charges in connection with the alleged assault: attempted murder on a police officer, resisting a police officer with a deadly weapon, aggravated stalking and two counts of battery with a deadly weapon.

Just before 7 a.m., Mason rammed the officer's unit with his car near Jones Boulevard and the 215 Beltway, forcing the unit into oncoming traffic, police said.

Mason's car rolled across his lane, eventually landing on its tires.

When the officer went to check Mason for injuries, police said Mason jumped out of the car and attacked the officer with a screwdriver.

A passing motorist saw the attack and was able to help the officer detain Mason until backup arrived, police said.

The officer, an eight year veteran, was taken to University Medical Center, where he was treated and released for injuries.

Mason has previously been booked on charges of lewdness, narcotics violations, drunken driving and battery domestic violence, police said.

Before attacking the officer, Mason had been booked for stalking him, police said. The officer had arrested Mason during a previous, unrelated incident.
