Construction, Holiday Lead To Airport Congestion

Remote Parking Lot, Taxis, Friend Drop-Off Recommended, McCarran Says

Since the Fourth of July holiday will be a part of a three-day weekend for the first time since 2005, McCarran Airport wants travelers to be prepared for congestion over the next few days.

More than 524,000 people are expected pass through McCarran during the holiday, with nearly 150,000 travelers expected on Thursday as well as Sunday.

Ongoing construction on McCarran’s $1.8 billion Terminal 3 project will disrupt the airport’s long-term parking lots until shortly before Thanksgiving, officials said. This means that people will need to find alternate ways to the airport -- like taxi or a friend -- or be willing to use the airport’s long-term parking capacity.

“We recognize that parking at a remote lot is not an ideal situation,” said Randall Walker, director of the Clark County Department of Aviation. “Until we complete our new long-term Economy Lot this fall, we’re once again asking locals to leave their cars at home if they’ve got another option for getting to and from the airport. Save some time, and money, by leaving your car at home.”

While crews will utilize overflow parking lots, Walker said those who want to park at McCarran should arrive two hours prior to their scheduled departure time to allow excess time for shuttle buses to ferry them from an overflow lot to the terminal.
