NORTH LAS VEGAS -- The Echo Fire was 85 percent contained Sunday evening and was estimated to be fully contained by 6 p.m. Monday, fire officials said.State Route 157 was opened at 6 p.m. Sunday. A small portion of Echo Road will remain closed by the National Transportation Safety Board to continue accident scene investigation.Fire activity was minimal on Sunday, with a 30-foot-wide containment line. Winds were blowing away from structures, fire officials said.Approximately 130 firefighters were suppressing the blaze.
The wildfire was caused by a small plane crash on Saturday afternoon.Authorities said four people were killed when their plane crashed after apparently striking power lines about 20 miles northwest of North Las Vegas.Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said all four were passengers in the single-engine plane. He said there were no survivors.Gregor said a preliminary investigation showed the Piper Cherokee was en route from the North Las Vegas airport to Byron, Calif., when it crashed at about 3 p.m. at the 7,000-foot level on Mount Charleston. The plane burst into flames after crashing and was destroyed.Authorities have not released information about the passengers.Metro police closed down upper Kyle Canyon and evacuated everyone in the area, including hikers.Police said the Echo Fire was estimated at 10 acres in the U.S. Forest Service’s Spring Mountains National Recreation Area.No structures have been lost, and no firefighters have been injured.
