NORTH LAS VEGAS -- A wildfire at Mount Charleston caused by a small plane crash has caused the mandatory evacuation of 38 homes.Authorities said four people were killed when their plane crashed after apparently striking power lines Saturday afternoon about 20 miles northwest of North Las Vegas.Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said all four were passengers in the single-engine plane. He said there were no survivors.Gregor said a preliminary investigation showed the Piper Cherokee was en route from the North Las Vegas airport to Byron, Calif., when it crashed at about 3 p.m. at the 7,000-foot level on Mount Charleston.The plane burst into flames after crashing and was destroyed.Authorities did not immediately release information about the passengers.Metro police closed down upper Kyle Canyon and evacuated everyone in the area, including hikers.State Route 157 at mile marker 12 and the intersection of State Route 158 and State Route 157 was closed.Police said the Echo Fire was estimated at 10 acres in the U.S. Forest Service’s Spring Mountains National Recreation Area.The fire was adjacent to homes. Rapid suppression response has so far protected the homes, and the fire was moving uphill in heavy fuels Saturday night.No structures have been lost, and no firefighters have been injured.Firefighters said the blaze was 20 percent contained as of Saturday night. They said they expected it to be fully contained by Sunday night.About 100 firefighters, including county, state and federal, are working on the blaze.There was a temporary flight restriction placed over the fire, as well as restrictions on campfires and smoking.Power was restored to the area at 5 p.m.FOX5 News has crews at the scene.
