CARSON CITY, Nev. -- In order to give the Legislative and Executive branches more time to prepare, Gov. Jim Gibbons is pushing back the budgetary special session.Gibbons announced the delay Friday in a statement, saying that the governmental offices need more time to incorporate the high unemployment rate into the plans."Friday’s revelation that unemployment in Nevada has reached levels not seen even in the months following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 reinforces the need for this Special Session of the Legislature to cope with our budget crisis," Gibbons said.In a special meeting of the Economic Forum held Friday, members agreed with the projections that the state budget office created for the coming fiscal year, which show a $1 billion shortfall in the current operating budget."This brief delay in the start of the Special Session will give our staff time to crunch the numbers even further and ensure we don’t end up in the same place three months from now," said Senate Majority Leader Bill Raggio.Employment officials also announced Friday that the unemployment rate in Nevada hit 6.2 percent in May, the highest the state's seen since 1994.The three-day special session will begin at 9 a.m. on June 27.
