LAS VEGAS -- There were three separate collisions involving automobiles that hit a total of 12 people over the weekend in Las Vegas.Eleven of 12 people struck by vehicles were either standing on or walking on the sidewalk. It was a difficult three days for accident investigation detail.A witness described his account of what happened early Sunday morning at Las Vegas Boulevard near MGM.
“A car came down the middle lane, cuts over, hits everybody right on the sidewalk ... bodies are flying everywhere,” said Marcus Pierre.Police said the driver fled but later surrendered. In another incident, a man in his 70s was walking along a sidewalk at South Lamb Boulevard and East Colorado Avenue and was struck from behind and dragged 100 feet, police said. The driver tried to flee, but witnesses prevented him from leaving.Early Friday evening, a woman in her 60s crossed North Maryland Parkway about 20 feet from the crosswalk at Stewart Avenue and was run down by a large gray or burgundy SUV, police said. That woman died in the hospital.“Our majority of pedestrian fatalities that we have here, unfortunately, have been pedestrian error,” said Metro Sgt. Oscar Chavez. But over the past weekend, police said it seemed the incidents were the fault of the drivers.Metro said they continually enforce the rules of the road for both motorists and pedestrians.Eight of the 10 victims who were hit on Las Vegas Boulevard were treated at a hospital and released.Of the three crashes, one driver has been arrested for felony DUI.The driver who surrendered, Rome Jefferson, 20, of Las Vegas, was cited for unsafe turning movement -- lane change, driving without a license, failing to report a traffic accident and leaving the scene of an accident. The third driver remains at large.
