Foreclosure Seminar Last Hope For Some

Lenders, Counselors Help Homeowners Rework Loans

Homeowners looked for foreclosure help at a free seminar in Las Vegas Friday at the Cashman Center.

Hundreds of people facing foreclosure attended the seminar, and some said foreclosure is the most stressful thing in their lives, and they don't know what do.

For the first time, Beverly Hontrup, 59, said she has missed two mortgage payments.

“I can't sleep. I don't turn my air conditioner on because I can't pay the bill when that comes,” she said.

Last year, after her husband and son passed away, she said she refinanced her home.

Hontrup said she is out of a job, on a fixed income and facing foreclosure.

“I don't know where to go, what to do. I know I have two mortgage payments that I'm behind on from two different companies. I don't know what to do,” Hontrup said.

She said her bank told her to come to the seminar, which was sponsored by Sen. Harry Reid and the state attorney general.

Lenders and credit counselors were on hand to help people rework their loans.

“This is the first time in history lenders are wanting to modify these loans,” said real estate advisor Leticia Gardea.

They offered different options to deal with foreclosure, such as setting up different payment plans, adjusting spending habits and moving into a rental.

“Make sure you call right away and don't leave those letters unopened,” she said. “The key factor is you don't want to talk to the service department. You want to talk directly to the lost mitigation department.”

For homeowners like Hontrup, the seminar was their last hope to avoid foreclosure.

Experts are also warning to beware of scammers, like people who say they can fix a homeowner's foreclosure situation if he or she pays them $500 or $700.

There's another foreclosure seminar from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Cashman Center at 850 Las Vegas Blvd. North. It's free to the public.
