Parents Kept From Contacting Dead Tot's Siblings

4 Of Their Children Still In Care Of Child Haven

There is new information about the death of Jason Rimer, the 4-year-old found dead in the family car Monday.

His parents were in court Wednesday.

Stan and Colleen Rimer's hearing was closed to both the media and general public.

Even the court transcripts have been sealed.

The two are scheduled to make another court appearance on Monday.

The decision to ban the public and media was made by the judge on behalf of the Rimer's underage children.

“He decided that it was in their best interest that they close the hearing,” said court information officer Michael Sommermeyer.

Right now, those four children are being cared for by Child Haven.

While it is unknown exactly what was said in court during the hearing, Sommermeyer shed a little light on the proceedings.

“It’s laid out. Here is what happened. Here is what some of the concerns the state has ... in this case,” he said.

There did seem to be enough concern that a protective custody hearing will be held Monday to determine whether the children should be returned to the family.

Until then, the Rimers are to have no contact with them.

“It was purely an accident,” said family spokesman Michael Gonzalez.

The Rimers declined to speak after the hearing.

“They would like, if anything, for the community to understand this is a tragic accident that can happen to anyone,” Gonzalez said.

As for how the family could lose track of a special needs child, Gonzalez said Jason was far from being a serious case.

“He had a very, very mild learning disability … just learned a little slower than the average child. But no, he didn't require any type of special care or anything like that,” Gonzalez said.

He said the family also wants to thank the community for their outpouring of sympathy over what happened.

After Monday's hearing, the Rimers will be back in court next Wednesday, at which time they would have to answer to any charges, if the district attorney's office determines they should be charged.

The family is going ahead with funeral arrangements, but no date has been set.
