LAS VEGAS -- With gas prices peaking above $4 a gallon throughout the Valley, county departments are struggling to compensate for the extra costs of fuel.In order to bring budgets down, Metro police and the U.S. Postal Service are developing plans to end the pain at the pump.Metro officials said that police are now only allowed to use 87 octane fuel -- which is the cheapest grade of gas. They are also not allowed to idle in their units to complete paperwork, opting to complete it once back at the station.Postal officials are also altering procedures to counteract the cost of fuel, because for every one penny increase in gas prices, it costs the U.S. Postal Service $8 million to deliver mail.
Currently, there are 219,000 mail trucks in the fleet nationally with 1.2 billion miles driven, totaling 121 million gallons. Some post offices in other state have started putting letter carriers on bicycles while they look to refine routes for the mail trucks. For more tips on saving gas or to find the lowest fuel cost in Las Vegas, visit the FOX5 Pump Patrol.
