A child was found dead in a car Monday morning.

Metro police are still trying to figure out if the 4-year-old boy died from heat and why he was left unattended inside the vehicle.

The boy was found in side a car in front of his house near East Sahara Avenue and South Nellis Boulevard.

“Unfortunately, we did find a deceased child in a vehicle,” said Metro Lt. Ray Steiber.

Metro police and Clark County Fire were called at 8:30 a.m. to a home on Cleveland Avenue.

“We don't know what the cause of death is at this time. That's part of the investigation -- is heat -- can that be a factor? We're looking into that,” Steiber said.

Investigators are also trying to figure out how the 4-year-old got inside the car.

Police confirmed his parents were at home when he was discovered in the vehicle, but they are still investigating what role the parents might have played.

“We're looking at the circumstances. Why that child was left in the vehicle, as far as how long the child was left in the vehicle. We don't have that at this time,” Steiber said.

Police said the boy comes from a large family.

“When you have a child in the vehicle, it's never OK to leave that child unattended,” Steiber said.

He said cars can reach temperatures of 130 degrees, whether the windows are open or not.

Police said the parents have not been charged with any crime, and they're still investigating the death to determine if heat or negligence were factors.
