LAS VEGAS -- The average price for regular gas rose about 20 cents in the past three weeks nationwide, according to the Lundberg Survey. In Nevada, AAA officials said the average price of gas is $4.13 a gallon.With no end in sight to the increasing pain at the pump, more Valley drivers are ditching their cars for scooters."It's lots of fun to ride and get a sun tan while you're out riding," scooter owner Betsy Buck said.While they could not provide an exact number, Safari Scooters and Cycles on Boulder Highway has seen a huge spike in scooter sales."By the time you've had a scooter for six months or a little longer, you've already paid for it in the savings in gas," said Trish Glatter with the company.Most scooters start at $1,400 for purchase, traveling at 30 mph and getting on average 55 miles per gallon of gas.While they save money, owners of Safari Scooters and Cycles said riders should wear helmets and take safety courses. Seasoned riders added that new drivers should practice in parking lots before hitting the streets, and always stay alert.Company owners said that scooters do not require registration, insurance or helmets.
