Union Reaches Agreement With Contractor

LAS VEGAS -- Union leaders have called an end to a strike at a massive Las Vegas Strip casino project after reaching an agreement with the contractor.Plumbers' union head Tate McGinty confirmed the deal Tuesday.He said it will tighten safety measures and improve training at the MGM Mirage's CityCenter work site.Workers said all of their demands were met, including: work site security assessments, onsite OSHA courses paid for by management and full job site access for union officials.
The agreement is between building trade union chiefs and site general contractor Perini Building Co.Picketing outside the work site has stopped. McGinty said work will resume at midnight. Work on the neighboring Cosmopolitan will begin at 9 p.m.The strike began Monday at midnight in response to the sixth construction worker death since 2006 at the site of the more than $9 billion resort.An MGM Mirage spokeswoman released the following statement on Tuesday:“We have been informed of today's agreement between Perini and the Building Trades. We will continue to insist that Perini, its sub-contractors and the unions work together to ensure that safety awareness and individual responsibility is foremost in the minds of every worker every day on the job site."The president of Perini's human resources released the following statement on Tuesday:“Perini Building Company considers safety its highest priority. Recent incidents on our Las Vegas projects are a major concern, and we are committed to collaboration with the building trades, subcontractors and suppliers to continuously improve our safety efforts for all of our operations.“Our policy has been to provide OSHA 10 training to all supervisory employees on Perini’s current Las Vegas projects. We have agreed with the Building Trades Council and local unions to identify all trades employees working at the CityCenter and Cosmopolitan job sites who have not already completed OSHA 10 training and to make such training available during work hours to all current trade employees on-site. In addition, Perini has agreed to work with the Building Trades Councils “Center for Construction Research and Training in conducting work site safety assessments for both the MGM MIRAGE CityCenter and Cosmopolitan project sites. As always, we will continue to allow union officials and safety professionals access to our projects. These measures will serve to supplement and enhance our existing unprecedented comprehensive safety efforts, particularly in Las Vegas.“Some of the processes already in place include:Senior Management jobsite safety meetings (bi-monthly) with craft workforce by project Pre-task planning for all contractors and processes Enhanced safety orientation for all new hires Skill level assessment and process-specific training for all field personnel Personnel hoist maintenance and training process Participation in the Ironworkers Advisory Board Quarterly safety meetings with the Building Trades Union Retention of Global Safety Management (outside safety consultant) Weekly Superintendent meetings to review current and historic incidents and corrective action plans Weekly job site logistics meetings with Supervisory personnel Weekly job site logistics meetings with Las Vegas Fire Department Monthly jobsite safety survey by Subcontractor Safety Directors. “As the leader in the Nevada construction industry, Perini maintains its unwavering commitment to the construction industry and to the community to provide safe work sites.”
