LAS VEGAS -- The foreclosure crisis continues to plague the valley, with many times, family pets becoming the innocent victims who are left behind. Some animal shelters are over-capacity from taking in abandoned pets and need help. The Nevada SPCA at 4800 W. Dewey Drive said pets are being dropped off there and at pet hospitals and even groomers. They said every day, they receive 100 calls or e-mails asking if the shelter can take in another animal. One animal received the name “Three Dollar,” because his owners left him at the SPCA with a $3 donation.
People have been coming there with prepared statements to find the animal a new home. Other times, people leave the animal in the foreclosed home, or worse, they end up in parks. The SPCA has seen a dramatic spike in animal drop-offs, because people have lost their homes or jobs.“We're just stretched to the max with our resources, our volunteers, everything,” said Executive Director Doug Duke.Every inch of the no-kill shelter is covered, with 200 cats that need to be adopted and even an exotic rabbit. There are more than a 100 dogs, along with guinea pigs, rats and chinchillas. The SPCA said there's a huge need for people to adopt these animals or give them a foster home.“It breaks my heart,” said foster mom turned volunteer, Melissa Ansley. “I’ve always loved animals and had cats growing up, and I knew they needed help and came down to see what I could do … started volunteering a month and a half ago. It’s just really rewarding, because you know that you’re helping these cats get socialized and ready to go home to a good home.”Homes are needed for hundreds of animals left behind in this foreclosures crisis. The SPCA said donations are always helpful, but what they really need is people to step up and adopt the animals or give them a foster home.
