LAS VEGAS -- The pain at the pump is also taking a toll on first responders.Metro police and Clark County fire rely on their cars to get around, and it's costing a hefty price.Metro said they're paying 60 cents more per gallon compared to last year. Many agencies are having to look into more fuel-efficient means of transportation.
Gas prices in the valley are hovering around $4 a gallon. It's costing commuters, and it's having an impact on local agencies.“It’s certainly a big hit,” said Metro Officer Jose Montoya.Metro police has more than 2,000 cars patrolling the streets. They've seen a significant jump in their gas bills.“We're trying everything we can to conserve money as for as prices for gasoline. Other things we’re doing is looking at more fuel-efficient, looking into hybrids, possibly a Chevy Malibu, smaller SUVs,” Montoya said.Clark County Fire Department is also feeling the pinch.“You look at the price of diesel nowadays – that’s a lot of fuel at an expensive cost to the county and taxpayers,” said Clark County fire spokesman Scott Allison. The fire department can use only diesel in their trucks and engines. The price of diesel is now around $4.50.It can cost the fire department hundreds of dollars to fill up its 60-gallon tanks.“I know many engineers that stand outside the gas pump and watch the numbers go up and up and up, higher and higher. Some of them are quite surprised, because it used to cost maybe $40, and is now twice, or three times more, than what we used to pay,” Allison said. One way these first responders try to conserve gas is to have their cars idle when they need to make a stop. It's more fuel efficient than turning on and off their vehicles.Metro also bought new Crown Victorias that run on ethanol gas, which is usually cheaper than regular unleaded gas.
