LAS VEGAS -- Toll roads could be coming to the valley soon. The plan includes most major arteries around town.Often when people hear the word “tolls,” they get angry, thinking about always needing loose change and spending money. But officials with the Nevada Department of Transportation said it will help easy congestion and give drivers more options. The plan awaiting approval would turn two lanes of freeway into toll lanes.
"What it includes is toll facilities, as well as monitors for HOV lane capacity," said NDOT spokesman Bob McKenzie. He said there would still be free access to Interstate 15 and U.S. 95, however they would be using the existing car pool lanes, or HOV lanes, and would not add more lanes. The project would cover U.S. 95 from Ann Road to the Spaghetti Bowl, and along I-15 from the 215 southern Beltway to the exchange with U.S. 95."With the growth we have, it’s a good way to manage traffic and ease congestion. It gives the motorist the option to use HOV lanes, pay the toll, or just use the free access freeway adjacent to these lanes," McKenzie said."I think they'll get more ill will than the money they earn," said resident Leo Spinelli. As word has spread, the backlash has been intense. Some people said they don't like to hear the word “tolls.”“I don't think we should have to pay for it. We already, the state, makes money through gambling and everything else. Why should we pay a toll to get to and from work?" said resident Silvia Hernandez."I'm from the East, originally. Toll roads are insane. It impacts your income substantially if you use the freeway system," said resident Dick Papaleo. What still needs to be determined is a price. But it’s safe to say if the project is approved, no matter what the cost, some drivers will be upset.NDOT officials said sensors would be installed on the road indicating how many people are in each car.The project still needs to be approved by the 2009 legislature.
