LAS VEGAS -- Gov. Jim Gibbons said he's confident the state board of medical examiners will properly investigate the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada. The center was closed earlier this year because tens of thousands of patients may have been exposed to hepatitis or HIV due to alleged unsafe medical practices. He said there is no need for a special counsel to investigate the doctors involved.“I just put three very capable, independent and medically oriented people on the board. I've given them the task of finding a solution, taking the steps necessary to rebuild the health care system in the state,” Gibbons said.
Two state lawmakers, assemblywoman Sheila Leslie and Senate minority leader Steven Horsford, called for the independent investigation into the health care crises in Clark County.Gibbons may want to watch his back. There was a time when Mayor Oscar Goodman said he was the happiest mayor in America, implying he wasn't interested in the governor's seat. Now, Goodman said he's very unhappy with the administration of Gibbons. He added that he hasn't yet made up his mind about a run for the position in 2010.
