Baby Boy Left In Gift Bag In Casino Trash

Police Say Baby Born Close To Time Found

There are new details about the baby boy dumped in a trash can at the Excalibur at Excalibur Way on Mother's Day.

Metro police believe the baby was either white or Hispanic.

Also, they said the baby was born close to the time he was found.

It was a shocking discovery inside the women's restroom on the casino floor of the Excalibur -- a full-term baby boy left in a trash can.

He was wrapped in a pillow case and towels inside an Excalibur gift bag.

“We have no idea if this person was a guest of the hotel or a guest at another hotel or came off the Strip and did this,” said Metro police Lt. Lew Roberts.

Police said they are treating this as a homicide.

“We're attempting to gather as much surveillance video as possible to see if we can see someone going in there with a bag or suitcase, something of that nature, or something suspicious,” Roberts said.

Police are also working with surrounding hotels and casinos to pinpoint where this baby might have been born.

“We're looking to see if housekeeping got any bedding bloody … all the hotel properties … any towels that may have had blood,” Roberts said.

An autopsy report is under way to determine whether the baby was born dead or alive.

Child advocates said this could have been prevented.

By law, anyone can safely drop a baby off at fire and police stations and hospitals, up to 30 days from the time the baby was born.

“There's a Safe Place location everywhere and marked with a sign. That's all you need to do. Someone will make the call on your behalf, and we will pick you up and transport you to a place where you are going to be taken care of,” said Matthew Hirsch of the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth.

All Terrible Herbst locations are Safe Places, and CAT buses, as wells as Joe's Crab Shack locations, are Safe Places, too.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555.
