LAS VEGAS -- A daughter speaks out a day after her father died in a car accident. He was killed by someone accused of driving under the influence. While most of us would be furious, this family is preaching forgiveness.Gregory Reyes, 51, was killed on Mother's Day by an apparent driver on drugs.
The accident happened at the intersection of North Torrey Pines Drive and West Lone Mountain Road. The family lives just down the street from the accident.Police said Laura Bryner, 20, was under the influence of drugs when she hit and killed Reyes.“I was heartbroken. I felt like my heart was going to come out of my chest,” said wife Rhonda Reyes.Reyes and her husband moved to Las Vegas just months ago to start a new ministry and a new life. The couple met on a Christian Web site and recently celebrated their two-year anniversary.“He's really the best thing that ever happened to me. I waited 18 years for this man to come along in my life,” Reyes said.Reyes was just blocks away from home when police said Laura Bryner was speeding down North Torrey Pines Drive and went through a red light. The 20-year-old slammed into Reyes' car, killing him instantly.“It was a mangled mess,” Reyes said. The young woman was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence of drugs.“If he would have left a minute later or a minute earlier, he wouldn’t be dead right now,” said stepdaughter Jeataun Johnson.Reyes’ stepdaughter and family said their faith is getting them through this tragedy.“I look at this as something senseless. She’s going to have to live with this for the rest of her life, but I forgive her, and I hope God forgives her,” Johnson said.“It’s fortunate God spared her life that maybe she lived as long as my husband lived, maybe she can make something of it,” Reyes said. “I thank the Lord for the two years I had with my husband. I wouldn't trade it for the world. I just wouldn't.”Reyes leaves behind four children. His family plans to bury him this week in northern California.
