LAS VEGAS -- One local high school just started testing students for drugs, but the district will be considering a plan Thursday to expand the program to other campuses. The school board will decide if they will apply for a grant to cover the costs of the testing at seven other schools. The $450,000 grant would allow those schools to test athletes and other students for three years.Currently, Green Valley High is the only school in the drug testing program. As of the end of April, the school has tested 250 students, and of that, seven people have come back positive for drugs. The tests look for nicotine, alcohol, marijuana and other drugs. It is mandatory for all athletes, but parents of other students can have them tested as well.
If the board approves the program, the school district would then have to apply to the federal government for the grant. Should the district get the grant, it does not mean each of the seven schools will automatically start testing. The principals of the schools will hold meetings with the community to make sure parents approve of the program. If parents agree, testing at the schools would start in January.
