LAS VEGAS -- A divorce isn't stopping Dawn Gibbons from acting as Nevada's first lady.Just days after the governor filed for divorce, the legal wrangling is already starting. Her lawyer said it's important to Dawn Gibbons to keep up her duties as first lady, regardless of the divorce. Now, her lawyer is asking for a change of venue.“It's totally unprecedented in my recollection that a governor would divorce his wife while in office,” said Dawn Gibbons’ lawyer, Cal Dunlap.Dunlap said it's important to her that she continue as first lady, working on issues like autism and the methamphetamine epidemic.Dunlap also said the first lady never wanted the divorce proceedings sealed.Gov. Jim Gibbons filed for divorce on Friday and asked a Carson City judge to keep the divorce proceedings private.“She believes there should be transparency in government,” Dunlap said.He said the first lady believes people should have access to information concerning public officials, their character and activities. Now, he's filed a demand to move the divorce trial from Carson City to Reno, saying it's because both the governor and the first lady list Reno as their permanent addresses. Many Nevada voters hope this divorce doesn't get ugly.“I can understand she's a little bitter. Women get a little bitter when husbands file for divorce after that many years of marriage. I can kind understand where she’s coming from,” said voter Angela Cavosi.“If he does remarry, then it’s going to cause a lot of problems between the two. If the new wife wants to take the position from him … No, I don’t think she should be able to keep it,” said voter Rance Taylor.Dawn Gibbon's attorney said he has considered whether or not to appeal the court order to keep this divorce behind closed doors but hasn't made a final decision yet.The governor and his lawyer have repeatedly declined to comment on the divorce, saying it's a private matter.
