Gas Prices Affect Cab Drivers

Many Taxi Drivers Pay 40 Percent Of Their Gas

We have never paid more for gas than we are paying right now -- and it could keep going up.

On Monday, the nationwide average was $3.50.

On Sunday, it was $3.49.

A month ago, it was $3.27.

And a year ago, we were paying $2.86.

Many taxi cab drivers said they're already facing the problem of too many cabs on Valley streets

Now, they say these rising prices are making it hard to keep their lights on.

Ted Dunn has been taxiing tourists to and from McCarran for 26 years. But this year, work is the only reason he'll be at the airport.

“We watch the numbers all the time and kinda wonder, when's it gonna end? I know it sure cut me from having my vacation this year,” Dunn said.

Many cab drivers pay for at least 40 percent of their own gas, so with record pump prices, filling the tank is making their profits tank.

Many drivers are already taking on the Taxicab Authority, because they believe there are too many drivers on the road -- another reason they say their income is shrinking.

Some of Dunn's younger counterparts are cutting their losses and quitting, but he said he doesn’t know how to do anything else.

“You either accept it for what it is, or get outta the business and become a tourist,” Dunn said.

According to the Lundberg survey, prices could go up as much as 30 cents over the next few weeks.
