LAS VEGAS -- The gloomy financial situation is being felt in Las Vegas as well, but compared to other parts of the country, a University of Nevada, Las Vegas economist said the Valley will weather the storm. The weakened dollar and oil prices hitting new record levels are indicators that our economy is in trouble. But Las Vegas has many different tricks up its tourist sleeve to attract people, even during tough times. On Thursday afternoon along the Strip, it was teeming with people.
But in other parts of the country, jobs are being lost at a much faster rate than in the Valley.“During times of which the economy slows down that we go back and offer value to the customers, lowering prices and putting together packages that are affordable -- are what people are looking for,” said UNLV professor Dr. Keith Schwer. He said the weakened dollar will make the U.S. and Las Vegas much more affordable to foreign visitors.Schwer said even for Americans, Las Vegas remains an affordable destination. He said the room rates remain inexpensive compared to national standards.
