Gibbons Blames Shortfall On Medicare, Schools

CARSON CITY, Nev. -- Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons said the Silver State could be in a $900 million budget deficit by 2009.Gibbons said Nevada's economy is struggling because of a slump in tax revenue statewide, a higher than expected Medicare caseload and rising school funding costs."It goes to show you … even the best laid plans can often go wrong,” Gibbons said.In January, Gibbons announced a 4.5 percent statewide budget cut.Now, Gibbons said additional cuts totaling $330 million must happen.There has been no word yet on where those cuts will come from.
