LAS VEGAS -- One child is dead and another is in the hospital after they were struck by a vehicle, police said.

Just before 8 p.m. Wednesday, investigators said, two children -- who were riding one bicycle -- attempted to cross Las Vegas Boulevard near Baltimore Avenue in front of oncoming traffic.

The driver of a pickup truck was unable to stop in time and struck the children, police said.

The child who was driving the bike was pronounced dead on arrival, police said, while the one riding on the handlebars was taken to University Medical Center with moderate injuries.

While the wreck is still under investigation, police said, the children's failure to yield to oncoming traffic may be the cause of the collision.
