Nevada Ranked Most Dangerous State

Nevada Least Safe State For Five Years Running

UPDATED: 4:12 pm PDT March 17, 2008

Thinking of moving to Nevada? You may want to take a peek at the annual Crime State Rankings 2008: Crime Across America report, which gave the home of Sin City its Most Dangerous State Award for the fifth year in a row.

Nevada also seems to be solidifying its claim to the title, as it recorded increases for each violent crime category from 2005 through 2006.

Nevada had the third highest murder rate, and the highest rate of robbery and motor vehicle theft.

Following Nevada on the list is Louisiana, New Mexico, South Carolina and Arizona.

Louisiana made a dramatic leap up (or down) the list, moving from a No. 10 ranking last year to No. 2 this year. It had the highest murder rate in the nation.

On the sunnier side of the list, New Hampshire was given the Safest State Award, knocking North Dakota out of the top spot, which it had held for 10 years strong.

New Hampshire had the lowest murder rate in the nation and the second-lowest rates for aggravated assault and burglary. Rounding out the top five safest states are Maine, North Dakota, Vermont and South Dakota.

The Crime State Rankings and the Safest and Most Dangerous State Awards are published by CQ Press, the reference and textbook publishing division of Congressional Quarterly.

Here is the list of states, ranked from safest to most dangerous.
