Missing Woman Case Deemed Homicide

Police Say They Suspected Foul Play From Beginning

The case of a missing Henderson woman is now a homicide case, police said.

Mariela Moreno disappeared after a New Year's Eve party.

More than two months later, her body was found near a park.

The family was hoping for her safe return, but after of months of searching, their worst fears have come true.

Last Friday, a jogger stumbled upon the missing woman's body at Sunset Park, just a couple of blocks away from her home.

“Obviously, everyone is shocked. You never expect this end because, of course, everyone was hoping for her to come home,” said family spokeswoman Esther Brown.

And home is where the 20-year-old was apparently last seen.

Her boyfriend told authorities he dropped her off at about 4:30 a.m. on New Year's Day, but never watched her go inside.

From the beginning, Henderson police suspected foul play.

“At first we didn't have a lot to go on evidence-wise, just witness statements. But in the past few months, we've gathered much more information. Detectives have an idea as to what may have happened,” said Todd Rasmussen of the Henderson Police Department.

Police aren't revealing too much about this ongoing investigation.

The last person to see Moreno, her boyfriend, has not been named a suspect or person of interest, but police have confirmed he is in Mexico.

“If we need to get a hold of someone, we can work with other agencies. It's not as difficult as some might think. We can get things accomplished when the time is right,” Rasmussen said.

Detectives and the family said they are hoping the evidence from the crime scene will lead to an arrest.

The cause of death is still under investigation, and the coroner’s office said it could take a while.

The family plans to hold services in the Valley for Moreno, and in Mexico. They plan to bury her in her hometown there.

An account has been setup for the Moreno family at:
