LAS VEGAS -- The clinic that left tens of thousands of people vunerable to hepatitis wants to reopen. Officials from the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada are planning to ask the City Council to reinstate the center's business license. The clinic was shut down Friday after exposing about 40,000 of its former patients to blood-borne diseases. Former employees said clinic management asked them to reuse syringes and medical vials to cut costs, which led to the facility's closure.Hundreds of people filled a ballroom at the Gold Coast to hear from doctors and lawyers Sunday. The attorneys and physicians wanted to make sure the ex-patients and their families know their legal rights."Well the goal was to provide information and to alleviate some concerns where we could and to provide some medical information that people could roles upon," attorney Peter Wetherall said. "Hopefully, they feel better about their situation."
Given that the partners and spouses of the center's former patients were also exposed to hepatitis via their loved one, attorneys said this could just be the tip of the iceberg.Clark County courts will have to decide whether or not there will be a class-action lawsuit. Lawyers said considering the 40,000 people could file claims against the company, it would be too much for the court system, so it would most likely be resolved in a class-action suit.
