Police Uncover Motive Behind Teen Killing

Arrest Report Says Intent Was To Scare, Not Kill

Metro police said they uncovered the motive behind Friday's fatal drive-by shooting near Palo Verde High School.

They said the intent was to scare -- not to kill.

Police said 16-year-old Gerald Davison confessed to shooting and killing 15-year-old Chris Privett.

According to the arrest report, the motive was an altercation between the victim and his friends and one of the girls riding in the car involved in the drive-by. She said the victim and his friends flashed her a gang sign as they were all near the corner of West Alta Drive and South Pavilion Center Drive.

Other passengers in the car said right before the shooting, Davison had both his hands between his legs near the floorboard and "racked" a pistol, the report said.

Police said it was a .22-caliber.

As the car drove past Privett and his friends, Davison fired several shots. After that, the car Davison was riding in sped off, according to police.

Police arrested Davison the next day. He apparently confessed to the crime, but said his intent was to scare-- not kill.

According to police, Davison was taken to Clark County Detention Center Thursday night.

"We live in the community, and it’s just not something you'd expect. Even though we didn't know the young man, our hearts go out to his family," said neighbor Steve Cull.

"It was a shock. You never think out of 400 kids at Palo, your good friend would be the one," said classmate Scott Stewart.

Ezekiel Williams, 18, the driver of the car, has been arrested and charged with being an accessory to murder and attempted murder. It's unclear if there are more arrests coming.

One of the shots fired from the car struck the backpack one of Privett's friends, the report said.

A memorial was held for Privett Thursday morning, and he will be laid to rest Thursday night at a funeral.
