LAS VEGAS -- A 10th-grade Palo Verde High School student is in custody after police said he shot a classmate dead as he walked home from school. The shooting happened Friday near Pavilion Center and Alta drives. Police said four students were shot at while walking home. One was struck and killed."The suspect is a 10th-grader at Palo Verde," Metro Chief Ted Moody said. "The victim is a ninth-grader, also a student from Palo Verde. That's the extent of the known relationship of the two. We don't know that the boys even knew each other."Moody also said police do not believe the victim was the intended target, but someone in the group he was walking with was the target. While they did say the freshman was the victim of a drive-by shooting, officers said they do not think the shooting was gang-related.
Friends and family of the victim held a candlelight vigil Friday evening. They said they are outraged that this could happen."We wanted to bring some flowers and a teddy bear -- something," said Palo Verde sophomore Michael Ridenour.Summerlin residents created a tribute to the slain student where the freshman was shot. Many expressed sadness and outrage at what they call a senseless crime."So this is what we have to look forward to," neighbor Naome Jaramillo said, "hope and prey that our kids come home safe?"Fellow students who knew the freshman are still in shock."He doesn't do anything wrong -- seems kind of crazy this would happen to him," sophomore Adrian Laurian said. "It gets kind of scary. I guess you can't really be too safe."In a news conference Saturday, Metro police attempted to alleviate student anxiety."I think students at schools throughout our Valley can expect to see stepped up uniform police presence over the next several days if not weeks," Moody said.Officers called the conference to announce the arrest of another teen in connection to the shooting. Police found the boy hiding at the home of one of his friends.Investigators said the sophomore was in a car four other people -- including two adults -- when he fired the gun at the teens from the back seat."There were other people in the vehicle, though thus far, this student who we feel is to be the shooter is the only one charged," Moody said. The 10th-grade student is facing several charges in connection with the shooting, including one count of murder with a deadly weapon and three counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon.Metro said they still considers this an ongoing investigation and said charges are pending for the other four people who were in the car at the time shots were fired.
