LAS VEGAS -- County officials may cite the three-alarm fire at the Monte Carlo Hotel-Casino as a reason to alter building code. They will examine the foam sculpting that burned to determine whether there should be restrictions placed on its use.Ron Lynn, director of Clark County Development Services, has requested samples of the damaged façade for study. He said he is open to enhancing building codes if necessary, but said any discussion at this point is premature. The 3,002-room hotel was evacuated during the blaze on Jan. 25, and 13 people were treated for smoke inhalation. It is still closed for repairs.According to the Clark County Fire Department, the fire erupted after rooftop welders -- who were constructing a walkway -- allowed molten steel fragments to fall onto the roof, causing a fire that spread to the hotel's facade.
Union Erectors -- the company responsible for the welding project on the roof of the casino -- said its employees were following procedure when the fire started.
