Winds Postpone Monte Carlo Repairs

Internal Cleaning, Repairs Begin

Windy weather postponed plans to begin dismantling charred and dislodged sections of the facade atop the Monte Carlo Hotel-Casino.

"We had plans to re-deploy equipment to the roof top to put out scaffolding and other equipment to help assess the problem we have up there," MGM Mirage vice president of public affairs Gordon Absher said. "But, he high winds have not cooperated."

Officials did say some progress was made, including cleaning up the rooms damaged by smoke and water inside the top five floors of the 32-story resort.

About 6,000 employees and guests were forced to flee the hotel after a three-alarm blaze Friday. No one was seriously hurt, but 13 people did suffer smoke inhalation.

Most guests have been able to retrieve personal items from security.

County officials have said the hotel is structurally sound and could be occupied from the casino up to the 26th floor, but they will not release the top floors until the burned façade is removed.

Fire crews are still trying to determine the cause of the fire. Casino officials have not released an amount of damages.
